The Czech Republic’s practice of surgically castrating convicted sex offenders is “invasive, irreversible and mutilating” and should stop immediately, the Council of Europe’s Anti-Torture Committee said in a report made public Thursday.

The central European country castrated at least 94 prisoners in the 10 years up to April 2008, when investigators from the Council of Europe, a human-rights forum, visited the Czech Republic.

The Council of Europe condemned the practice as “degrading.”

The procedure is being performed even on first-time, non-violent offenders, such as exhibitionists, its investigation revealed.

Prisoners have to request castration under Czech law, but many fear they will be jailed for life if they do not, the investigation found.

Zhang Shuhong, who co-owned Lee Der Industrial Co. Ltd., killed himself at a warehouse over the weekend, days after China announced it had temporarily banned exports by the company, the Southern Metropolis Daily said.

Lee Der made 967,000 toys recalled earlier this month by Mattel Inc. because they were made with paint found to have excessive amounts of lead. The plastic preschool toys, sold under the Fisher-Price brand in the U.S., included the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters.

It was among the largest recalls in recent months involving Chinese products, which have come under fire for globally for containing potentially dangerous high levels of chemicals and toxins.

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) — A brothel in Germany hopes to capitalise on the growing number of pensioners by offering them a 50 percent discount for sex in the afternoon.

The “Pascha” in the western city of Cologne has introduced reduced rates for sex sessions for clients aged 66 and above — provided they can prove they are old enough.

“All clients need to do is show us some proof of age,” said a spokesman for the brothel’s managing director Armin Lobscheid. “A ‘normal session’ costs 50 euros with us — and we’re now paying 50 percent of that for these older guests.”

“We don’t earn as much money, but we’re establishing ourselves across a broader range of age groups,” he added.

After testing the water with reductions for senior citizens once a week, the Pascha decided earlier this month to offer 50 percent off sex services between midday and 5 p.m every day.

“There’s been plenty of demand and people have certainly been taking advantage of the offer,” the spokesman said. “Older folks are more active than you think.”

The brothel’s Web site is keen to stress this point.

“Life begins at 66!” it says in an advert for its “senior citizens afternoon” next to a picture of a motorcycle rider.

LONDON – Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is getting his wish to serve in
Iraq.

The Ministry of Defense ended speculation that had been swirling for about a week by announcing Thursday the 22-year-old prince will be sent to Iraq with his Blues and Royals regiment in May or June.

Harry, a second lieutenant, will assume a troop commander’s role.

I have had a couple of these fluorescent bulbs that are not suppose to burn out but died within a few weeks. Other then that, they seem to be fine.

The Australian government on Tuesday announced plans to phase out incandescent light bulbs and replace them with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs across the country.

Legislation to gradually restrict the sale of the old-style bulbs could reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tons by 2012 and cut household power bills by up to 66 percent, said Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
