Driving Alexander to school today, I was taking the back roads where it isn’t uncommon to see all kinds of creatures pacing back and forth on the road. Today I had to slow down for some deer crossing. Not a big deal. Then I took off again going about 100 km/h when a squirrel ran out into the middle of the road. If the stupid thing just stayed put, he would have been fine. But as it is, he decided to ran back to where he came from. SPLAT! I ran over him. Whoops! I have been driving these back roads for 3 years now and this is my first road kill. And I was just thinking about that the other day. What would the odds be of me hitting an animal on those back roads. As it turns out, for me anyhow, my chances of hitting a animal on those back roads are about 1 in 600. I will update the odds the next time I smoke an animal.

On the weekend, I picked up a Struxx model toy from Toys R Us. It was in the clearance bin for $15 regularly priced around $80-$90. Alexander had a Struxx model car/plane and we put it together a couple of times and it was fun. Alexander started helping me out with this 619 piece monster but he quickly faded about 1 hour into the project. Took me about 4.5 hours to put it together. Anyhow, I decided to make a time lapsed video of the project. Check it out.

The toy has a motion sensor and when you walk by it, it growls and makes laser sounds. It also swings his head back and forth and the jaw opens and closes. The thing stands almost 2′ high.

Here is a quick run down of shit that I have to do around the house this spring/summer.

My first project is to complete a garbage shed. The one that I have right now looks like shit and is quickly falling apart. It has become the squirrels hang out spot. I purchased a live trap last year to catch the squirrels. That way, when I catch them, I can perform some water boarding and other torturous techniques on those little bastards. Fire and water have so many uses.

Second project is to start sanding one or maybe two sides of my house. I did one side last year and it turned out quite nice. Just slowly going to finish doing the same to the rest of the house. The new stain I am using is lighter then the previous colour.

I also have to get an excavator here to dig a french drain from my house over to the other side of my property. Every spring, there is a spring that forms in the middle of my driveway the washes away the gravel leaving potholes and trenches. I am not ready to pony up $10,000 to have the driveway paved, so I think redirecting the water is a good first step.

I didn’t put away my sons trampoline over the winter and some of the beams bent from the weight of the snow and ice. I don’t know if I will contact the company and just get them to send me replacement parts, or if I should build something else.

Forgot to mention I have to clean up a yard full of dog shit. Most of it is white and looks kind of fossilized. What makes dog shit turn white?

I also need to replace the side door on my garage. The doors frame is rotting out and needs to be replace. I have old cedar door that I am going to use that would be a huge improvement over the shitty door that I have now.

Michelle wants me to start a kitchen garden for her. I will pick up some landscape ties to start it off soon.

The Habs are going to probably lose their next play-off so that means hockey is over and I can get working on this shit sooner.

A dead mouse, that’s what! In fact, I found two of them. I was cleaning out the garage and returning about 20 bags of bottles and cans for a whopping $20 when the guy at return depot pointed out the mice at the bottom of bottles. I still have the bottles in the garage because they wouldn’t dispose of the bottles because of the mice. Maybe I will take a picture and post it. What we figure happened is mice went into the bottles to lick up the juice and then couldn’t climb out. Dumb asses!

SAINT JOHN – It was Peter Rekounas’s winning smile, for sure, that stole her heart.

But Barbara (Doas), his wife of 34 years, says it took more than that to convince her to marry the former sheep herder in their native Greece in July 1974, and then to follow him to Saint John where, since 1971, he had been carving out a living as a budding chef.

“He was young, he was kind, he was honest and he was hard-working,” she said Tuesday. “That is why I trusted him to leave my home and come from Greece and start a family with him.”

Those qualities never changed, she said, not even during Rekounas’s hard-fought, 17-month battle with colon cancer, which resulted in his death, at age 59, on Oct. 14.

“What Peter passed on to me and our children was to be kind to others, because he was a kind heart,” she said. “Right up to the last minutes, that is what he told the kids – ‘be kind to each other, and to others.’ ”

Rekounas, who had learned the basics of cooking during his two years in the Greek army, spent the last 29 years of his long career as a chef at The Mediterranean Restaurant on Rothesay Avenue.

Restaurants he worked at early on included the Venus, Carmen’s, the Belmont and Dianna’s.

“He loved his work, but he was also very happy when his kids were coming home, when the family were around,” said Barbara, who herself worked as a hostess and cashier at The Mediterranean for 17 years. “As soon as he came home and saw the family all together, it brought a smile to his face – even if he was tired.”

Panagiotis (Peter) Rekounas was born in Greece on Dec. 6, 1948. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers.

Besides his wife, his survivors include one son, Gregory of the Kingston Peninsula; one daughter, Vasiliki, or “Vicky” Zacharia, of Toronto; one grandson, Alexander, on whom he doted; and one brother and three sisters, back in Greece.

The Millidgeville resident was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

He used to follow harness racing. And, “if he ever saw a farm with animals, he would visit that,” said Barbara. “His good friend Paul Daeres, who grew up in the same small Greek village, had a farm in Westfield and he liked to visit on weekends whenever he could.”

Son Gregory remembers his father as “a bit a jokester, prankster, but a hard worker, too.

“It was all about family,” he added. “He didn’t see any rewards for himself. It was his kids, his wife, that type of thing. “¦ He was very supportive.”
