I wonder why Saint John would not have put a bid in for this? They already have the facilities via the 1985 Canada Games. Mind you they have been taking away most of the stands and flood lights in recent years due to the fact that groups aren’t allowed to use it! Anyhow, good for Moncton.
Moncton has been awarded the 2010 IAAF world junior track and field championship.
The New Brunswick city actually lost out to Bydgoszcz, Poland in bidding for the 2008 championships, which needed a second ballot before prevailing 15-11 at a meeting of the IAAF Council in Japan on Wednesday.
Following the vote, the Council decided to award Moncton the 2010 event.
“Council fully supported the ambitions of Moncton and Athletics Canada to organise a top class event which will promote the sport but also leave a lasting legacy in the shape of this new track,” said IAAF President Lamine Diack, making reference to the construction of a brand new stadium at Moncton University specifically for this championship.
Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper committed $6 million in federal funding to the building of an outdoor stadium for Moncton if it won the right to host the championships.
The federal money is part of a $13-million infrastructure agreement to build facilities for the games at the University of Moncton.
