Microsoft to go head to head with YouTube

YouTube is awesome! The other night, I spent about 30 minutes just watching various videos. The reason why I watched YouTube and not TV, because even though I have like 800 channels, there was nothing on TV except for Mythbusters.

Looks like Microsoft won’t let anyone rest.

Microsoft to go head to head with YouTube
Microsoft Corp. is hoping to tap the explosive popularity of online video sharing by joining startups such as YouTube and major internet rivals with its own video service.

“Soapbox on MSN Video” will let internet users watch and post videos, rate or comment on them and share favourites by e-mailing them or linking them to their personal Web pages or blogs.

Webkinz at the house

WebkinzRight! So, all the neighbourhood kids are running around with these plush toys that are called Webkinz. Everyday I would get asked by one of the little girls, “when are you getting Alexander his Webkinz?” “Ah, he hasn’t asked for one” was my reply. And he hadn’t. But I heard about online interaction, somewhat like neopets but you have to buy the plush toy that comes with a secret code that allows you access to the site.

So, we bought Alexander a gorilla pet and got him set up on the website. He named his pet “Nick”, probably cause that’s his friends name that will be visiting us tomorrow.

Anyhow, after getting him logged in and getting his pet adopted, I surfed around the site. Very Simsish. You have to feed you animal. He works once a day to get cash to buy stuff. And you furnish his pad too. You can also get cash by going to the arcade and racking up points.

All kinds of stuff for a kid and… uh… me to do on the site.

More cancer reported in NB

Found this interview that Michelle did a few years back with the CBC.

More cancer reported in NB
31 year old Michelle Rekounas was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma six years ago. She’s now in remission, but she worries about the increase in cancer patients and the lack of doctors to treat them.

“You can’t believe how many people are here and how little doctors there are, it scares you, it really does.”

Tried Internet Explorer 7 Beta today

I also removed Internet Exporer 7 today. What a piece of junk! First thing I found fishy about the product, the fact that you required Windows XP SP2. So, Microsoft needs to rely on it’s OS to handle the browsers security. I downloaded it anyway. During the installation I noticed some things, like messages saying ‘updating services.’ What the hell are you doing with my services? I don’t want you in there. On completion of the download guess what happened? If you guess ‘restart your computer’ you would be correct! I don’t recall Firefox or Opera doing anything like that. So, I reboot the stupid laptop just to see what this thing looks like. BTW, I did this on my work laptop, I don’t put spyware or malicious software on my home PC :)

Alright, so I have rebooted and I am back up and running. I launch the program and it tells me all about tabbed browsing. Ah, seen it like years ago on Opera and Mozilla browsers loser! Ok, so finally they have tabbed browsing. So the interface looks sleek so far and the tab browsing seems to work. Ok, lets click a link to something that will try and launch another window. Opps, instead of launching the new window in a tab, it opened a new window. I thought there must be some way of turning that off. I couldn’t find it right away. On to some more browsing. Seems that a lot of pages aren’t programmed for IE 7. To be expected but I would think Microsoft would want to make their new browser compatable to what is on the web. Hey, what am I saying? Microsoft comply to some type of standards. Everyone remembers their J++. What the hell was that?

So, in the end I quickly uninstalled the stupid browser so I could get on with my day. Oh, I did have to restart my computer again.

Something I have learned today, J++ is still around, it is called Visual J# or Visual J Sharp.

Google running out of hardware

I guess this is turning out to be a serious issue. I was wondering when it would happen.

Webmasters now report sites not being crawled for weeks, with Google SERPS (search engine results pages) returning old pages, and failing to return results for phrases that used to bear fruitful results.

“Some sites have lost 99 per cent of their indexed pages,” reports one member of the Webmaster World forum. “Many cache dates go back to 2004 January.” Others report long-extinct pages showing up as “Supplemental Results.”
