Killed a Squirrel today

November 26th, 2009 · 4 Comments · What I did today

Driving Alexander to school today, I was taking the back roads where it isn’t uncommon to see all kinds of creatures pacing back and forth on the road. Today I had to slow down for some deer crossing. Not a big deal. Then I took off again going about 100 km/h when a squirrel ran out into the middle of the road. If the stupid thing just stayed put, he would have been fine. But as it is, he decided to ran back to where he came from. SPLAT! I ran over him. Whoops! I have been driving these back roads for 3 years now and this is my first road kill. And I was just thinking about that the other day. What would the odds be of me hitting an animal on those back roads. As it turns out, for me anyhow, my chances of hitting a animal on those back roads are about 1 in 600. I will update the odds the next time I smoke an animal.

I did that once with a mink or a weasel or something. I was cruising along at about 160 kph when this thing came out and stopped, staring right at me. I drifted a little to allow him to straddle between my wheels… but he forgot to duck! Thump, thump, thump!

I had similar experience to Steve’s with a squirrel. It darted onto the road and I heard a thump. I drove back to check and there he was, dead as Dillinger, his eyes wide open, lying on back in the middle of the road. It was the first time I ever killed anything on the road.

We should start a support group.

I like how you say “It was the first time I ever killed anything on the road.” As oppose to other types of killing? :)

As oppose to other types of killing?

Yup. Afraid to say I’ve killed more than a few critters with a gun back in the day. Tasty critters, they were.
