Finally!
I recently had a hard disk go FUBAR (Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition) and I had to replace. I was running an application call SpinRite to recover my lost data. And even though the program seemed to be working, I estimated around 140 hours to recover, if it would recover.
So, I decided to start fresh. And can I tell you that I came this close to putting the vacuum cleaner deep inside my monitor.
When I got my HD, I plugged it in and expected everthing to be pretty routine, (ie Install OS, Drivers, Updates, etc.) Well, I get the hard drive and the first thing I find out is that I need to download a startup disk! How the fuck do I download a startup disk without a computer! Luckly, I brought my laptop home from work.
I then had the fun task of locating a 3.5 Floppy disk that would actually work. My question to Maxtor is: How many new computers come with 3.5 floppy drive? The answer is not fucking many! Mine does, but that is besides the point.
Next issue, the 200 GB hard drive that I just purchased, only showes up as a 137 GB drive… So the simple solution is the get Windows XP SP 1.
So, after I installed the OS and got some music on the PC (the silence was defining) I began to install MySQL and PHP. You would think for a guy like me, that has played around with that shit, it would be pretty easy. FUCK NO! MySQL was just as fucked up as PHP, even though they both have Windows Installers they both involve a fair amount of fine tuning.
Now I am here, spilling my guts out to you guys.
Have a nice day!
Okay, so I asked one of my co-workers, Amy, to read this comment. After reading it she asked the question “How are you two related?” Which I thought was pretty hilarious. Even though it’s great having a computer savvy brother, it blows our minds when anyone actually starting discussing computer lingo (expecially the programming crap) b/c it just goes right over our heads.
Speaking of computer and having computer savvy brothers. I may need you to build me a PC for Zac and me. Definitely need your input. I don’t want to make a dumb purchase like my laptop again.
Did I really use that much computer lingo?
Sure, I can build a PC for you. You can go one of two ways:
Either build one using a site like dell.ca.
Or you can get me to custom build one for you and you can pick it up in September.
I will look at both options an get you the price list for both options.
For someone who generally just uses the programs once you start talking techie, you’ve lost us.
Let’s look at both options. I want one cheap cheap cheap! I just don’t know what I should and shouldn’t have
We are not going to Staples or Futureshop! They are assholes!
There is a website http://www.ncix.com that sells hardware parts for pretty cheap, even after the shipping and handling. The only thing is, you need to have some knowledge of how to put one of those together. If we go that route, I would have to get you to send the parts to me and I would build it, and then you could pick it up in September when you come up.
You can have NCIX build it for you before shipping, for 50$ extra or something. That’s what i do for all my NOOB relatives!
What if we go the Dell route? I don’t want to spend more than $700
You would be better off if I built it. Your monitor alone is between $200 and $300.
